Workers Rescued From South African Gold Mine

South Africa's department of Mineral resources has announced the rescue of about more than 900 miners who were trapped in the shaft at the Beatrix gold mine, located in the city of Theunissen in the free state.

The incident occurred as a result of loss of power supply.
A violent storm had knocked out the electricity supply, which led to the miners being trapped.

According to the state broadcaster(SABC) -family members in their angry state had gathered near the mine waiting to hear news of their relative who had spent more than a full day underground.

James Wellsted, a spokesman for managing company - Sibanye-Stillwater, said the miners had stayed close to the shaft to ensure they were in a well - ventilated area with access to food and water ready to be delivered to them.
In James words: "Everyone is accounted, they are safe and in a safe place and we are providing food and water.
"We kept them there, rather than trying to use a secondary escape way, which would have entailed a four hour walk".

South Africa's Association of Mine Workers and Construction Union (AMCU) had shown their concern saying it was "extremely concerned about the situation".
The organization further stated that it questioned the lack of contingency plans in place to deal with such an incident.
